A Glimpse Into Irving’s History

Founded in 1903 by J.O. “Otto” Schulze and Otis Brown, Irving, Texas, was named in honor of author Washington Irving, a favorite of Otis Brown’s wife, Netta Barcus Brown. Before becoming Irving, the area was known as Gorbit in 1889 and later as Kit in 1894, before officially incorporating as Irving in 1914 with Otis Brown as the first mayor.

Early Irving featured churches, cotton gins, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. Education took root in 1909 with the Kit and Lively schools. Growth was gradual at first but gained momentum in the 1930s. By the 1960s, Irving’s population had risen to about 45,000. Key milestones included the opening of the University of Dallas in 1956, Texas Stadium in 1971 (home of the Dallas Cowboys), and the Chateau Theater in 1964.
