Protect Your Teeth From Grinding and Clenching While You Sleep

Teeth Grinding Guards

Stiff and tired jaws upon waking or teeth that are sensitive to cold drinks are common problems to those that grind or clench their teeth during sleep. Grinding of the teeth is a medical condition called bruxism. Bruxism is an involuntary action and some people may never realize they unconsciously grind or clench their teeth until symptoms begin.

Symptoms of Bruxism

  • Grinding or clenching of the teeth, which may be loud enough to waken your sleep partner
  • Teeth that are fractured, chipped, flattened or even loose
  • Worn tooth enamel
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Pain or soreness in the face or jaw
  • Tired or tight jaw muscles
  • Severe headaches and/or pain that feels like an earache
  • Indentions in the tongue and damage to the inside of the cheek
  • Gum recession

Over time bruxism will result in the wearing down of your natural tooth enamel. Studies suggest that clenching and grinding can cause up to 80 times the normal wear experienced per day compared to those who do not grind.

What Causes Bruxism?

  • Malocclusion or misalignment of the teeth
  • Sleep apnea or other sleep problems
  • Emotions – tension, anxiety, stress, frustration, or anger
  • Stomach acid reflux into the esophagus

Treatment of Bruxism

The recommended treatment for bruxism is to wear a clear, removable device called a night guard. A night guard is designed to be worn during sleep to prevent the high impact of grinding and clenching on the teeth and jaw joint. A night guard custom designed for your mouth will provide the most therapeutic results because it will fit perfectly over your upper teeth and distribute force more evenly, preventing high impact and stress on and jaw joint. It will protect your existing teeth and any dental restorations.

Get Relief from Bruxism

“I suffered from severe migraine headaches for years. I sought relief from neurologists, orhinolaryngololists (ENTs) and hormone specialists, which included expensive tests and medication, and simply didn’t work. I finally resigned myself to just live with the pain. Finally, Dr. Dunn recommended a nightguard for recession caused by night grinding. I have been surprised and thrilled to find my headaches have gone away! I also didn’t even realize the throbbing in my temples was actually jaw pain. My nightguard has been a life-changer for me, and I never sleep without it. Thank you, Dr. Dunn!”
